Lip Care Tips and Tricks!

This post contains affiliate links.

I’ve talked a lot about skincare…the importance of exfoliation, my favorite acne products, washing your face properly and my current skincare routine (both am and pm)…but I have consistently left out one very important part of your face, your lips! Taking care of your lips is just as important as the rest of your face and today I am going to tell you some of my favorite lip care tips and tricks!

Like the skin around your eyes, the skin on your lips is some of the thinnest on your entire face and therefore prone to more damage. I don’t know about you but I have had my fair share of burned lips this summer and it’s no fun! And with fall here and winter on the way soon (yuck!!) chapped lips are soon to follow. There’s no better time than the present to start taking good care of your lips so they stay properly hydrated and moisturized all year long!!

First of all one thing a lot of people forget to do is exfoliate! Exfoliating you lips with a very mild exfoliant is good for getting the dead skin off and making you lips feel super soft and smooth. One of the easiest ways to accomplish this with an item you already own is giving your lips a little scrub with a toothbrush. I used to have a designates small, travel toothbrush specifically for this purpose. It works well and gets the job done nicely. You can also do the same thing with a clean washcloth!

If lip scrubs are more your thing, you can make your own scrub with a mixture of honey and sugar or olive oil and sugar. Or you can just buy one! Personally I am obsessed with this Fizz and Bubble Bubble Gum Lip Scrub. It has just the right amount of exfoliation, is all natural and it tastes really good! HA!

I keep it in my bathroom and just use it as part of my pm skincare routine. It’s not harsh at all so I use it pretty much every night and follow it up with a thick, super moisturizing lip mask and I am good to go!

Speaking of lip masks, that is my next “trick”! I used to just use a regular lip balm before bed but my lips never felt any different and regular lip balms just don’t last very long. Enter into the picture, lip masks. I heard about this Bite Agave Lip Mask through a blog a couple of years ago and actually purchased it about a year ago for myself. I didn’t use it much at first because it was a little weird!

First of all the product is super thick. I’m talking thicker than vaseline thick and you only need a tiny amount to get your lips covered (this is from someone with big lips, LOL!) and it stays on all night long! My lips have never felt so moisturized when I wake up in the morning after I use this at night. I have recently started keeping it on my nightstand so I don’t forget to use it at because I have literally had this same tube for over a year and it still looks and feels like new…HA! Like I said, it only takes a tiny bit!

I just have the plain, clear lip mask but now it also comes in a light pink and a darker pink. I guess those are for people who also wear it during the day or like feeling fancy at night??

Another tip to keeping your lips healthy is water!! Your lips are only as hydrated as you are and no matter how many times you exfoliate and lip mask your lips will still feel dry and chap more easily if you don’t drink enough water. A trick I learned and try to live by, even though this doesn’t happen every single day, is to drink half your body weight in ounces of water a day. So if you weigh 100 pounds then you need to drink 50 ounces of water. It sounds easy enough but it’s really hard!! And this is coming from someone who only drinks water, HA!

The last tip I have you is to not lick your lips. I know it’s tempting and if you are anything like me it’s just a habit but licking your lips is actually really and for you! Continually licking your lips dries them out and makes them more susceptible to getting chapped. Ouch!

How do you take care of your lips??

I love this! I just started using a lip scrub recently. It sounds like it would make things work, but it doesn’t! It’s just like exfoliating any other part of your skin.

Okay, I’ll have to give Bite a try! I know my friends love the brand. My lips are CONSTANTLY dry – I’ve tried so many tricks. It’s hard to keep them hydrated.

I am a big fan of lip scrubs! It does help keep my lips supple. I also use the right moisturizing formula as part of my night time beauty routine. I did not know that licking your lips can dry them out. I will have to keep that in mind.

I would have to check this out. My lips are my favorite (after my eyes) asset to dress up. I hate when it starts to get chapped, so I make sure to keep it moisturized! Thanks for the tips :)

I can honestly say I have never heard of a lip mask! I totally need to pick up the Bite Agave Lip Mask because my lips could definitely use a little TLC!

Oh, and I didn’t know that licking your lips made them chapped! No wonder mine are such terrible shape all winter!

Guilty as charged with regard to licking the lips. Will try to get rid of that habit. Didn’t know doing so can dry the lips. Thanks for the info!

I have a tendency to lick my lips when I’m working. I’m constantly putting on Sephora lip balm to keep them as soft as possible. I’m gonna check this product out.

I used to use a lip scrub and used on my clients when I was working in esthetics. I’d do an add-on treatment with eye masks and lip scrub and moisturizing. So good!
