I have talked a lot about my hair lately…from the best texturizing sprays for fine hair to my must have hair products for fine hair to keeping your naturally curly hair healthy during the summer months to faking a blowout at home. I have covered a LOT of hair topic but I haven’t really covered my must have hair products for color treated hair which is weird because I have been coloring my hair for years!!
If you have been following my blog for any amount of time then you know that I usually keep my hair colored dark brown. Dark brown is my natural hair color and I started getting grays in my mid-twenties so I have been keeping them covered ever since. I got bored with my plain dark brown locks last year and after a disastrous coloring experience I found a new hair lady and started lightening my hair this past January with some light balayage. If you recall, last month I got my balayage lightened for summer and it’s the lightest is has been in YEARS!! I love it but I am learning that lightened hair has a lot more upkeep than my usual dark locks.
I have officially delved into the world of purple/blue shampoo and have been having to use more hydrating masks!! It’s been a learning experience for sure and today I am excited to share with you my must have hair products for color treated hair!! Enjoy!!
ONE. Joico Color Balance Blue Shampoo. Right after I got my hair lightened my super sweet hair lady told me I needed to get some blue shampoo to use a couple of times a week. Now I had heard of purple shampoos before but never a blue shampoo and when I asked her why blue she said blue was best for my hair because since I am naturally so dark headed my hair pulled a brassy orange during the lightening process and the blue shampoo will help to balance out all the brassiness while purple shampoo helps more with neutralizing yellow tones. So if your hair is like mine and pulls more orange/brassy then you need a blue shampoo!!
She used this Joico blue shampoo on me in the salon and I loved it so much I grabbed a few bottles from Ulta when they were on sale. They are normally $16.99/bottle but when I bought them they were on sale 2/$20! Can’t beat that!! Plus, it smells amazing!!
TWO. Herbal Essences Color Me Happy Conditioner. I have been a self-proclaimed Herbal Essences hair product junkie for years. I have used different combinations of their shampoos and conditioners for 10+ years and it honestly works better on my hair than any salon brand and if they had a blue shampoo I would be using that, for reals though! I love the way this conditioner makes my hair feel and will let it sit for a while when I’m in the shower and rinse it out right before I get out of the shower. I almost use it like a hair mask?? It really is amazing and leaves my hair silky soft!!
THREE. Hair Remedie Frizz Eliminating Towels. For the part couple of years I have been using hair towels/towels made specifically for drying my hair with and I love them. I think it’s great to use a towel that is specifically for the purpose of drying your hair and thought I had some great ones until Hair Remedies sent me these bad boys. Now they claim to eliminate frizz and that’s a tough claim to make and keep, especially when you have crazy wavy/curly hair in the south and it’s 100% humidity outside but I was up for the challenge.
I can honestly say that after one use I was hooked. I love these hair towels, they are made of terrycloth but have a t-shirt like material on the outside so while they soak up the moisture your hair isn’t exposed to the rough texture of the terrycloth, therefore leaving it super smooth and soft. I also love the size of these things, most hair towels are pretty small and this one was large enough to accommodate all of my hair!
FOUR. OGX Blowout Spray. I am not going to lie to you, for years I was the worst at not using any kind of blowout or heat protectant spray on my hair. Now I can’t not use this stuff!! Not only is it an amazing heat protectant but it cuts my blow-dry time in half. It literally only takes me a few minutes to dry my whole head, which is a huge bonus because the less heat you use on your hair, the better!! Plus this stuff also contains hydrolyzed silk and quinoa to make your hair super soft!!
FIVE. Moroccanoil Treatment. Some days I notice that my hair is just drier than others. When it starts to feel like that I use this oil treatment on the ends only (also where my hair is the lightest) and this magical oil adds just enough moisture back into my hair so that it looks and feels great! Some people find this oil to be a little much so if you fall into this camp have no fear because there is a lighter version as well!! I haven’t tried the lighter version but I have only head good things about it! Also – I grabbed the mini size of this oil last fall and am still using it, I don’t use it a lot or very frequently so it works for me!
SIX. Pureology Hydrate Superfood Treatment Mask. I actually don’t use hair masks that often, my hair is in pretty good shape considering all that I put it through! HA! But I did recently discover this bad boy and I love it! It feels like butter and gives plenty of moisture without weighing your hair down. There is nothing worse than using a hair mask and then feeling like you need to wash your hair again and this mask doesn’t leave your hair feeling like that. It’s pretty amazing stuff!
And those, my friends, are my must have hair products for color treated hair…good shampoo/conditioner, a dedicated hair towel, a blowout/heat protectant spray, an oil treatment and a hair mask!
What are your favorite products for color treated hair??

I do have color treated hair, but I also have keratin treated hair which limits what I can use. I always have to ask my hair dresser before trying out a new product because I don’t want it to cancel out my keratin and have my curls come back.

Coloring ones hair is hard on the hair so finding good products that help is important. Not harsh that it damages the hair and takes out the color.

My essential for colour treated hair is my ShimmerLights shampoo!! I need to try the jersey towel though!!! Thanks for the ideas!

I didn’t even realize there was a blue shampoo; I’ve been using purple since I went blonde…BUT that is gonna change, because I need that blue. My hair does tend to turn orange and brassy. I’ve never heard of these hair towels before, but they sound amazing!

I have not died my hair in a while but in a few weeks I’m going to again. I will definitely be buying these products so that I can keep the color and longer.

I’ve never had color treated hair before. I’ve always want to color my hair though. I have to keep a list of these products in the event that I do.

All of these products look really great. I definitely color my hair a couple of times a year and these products all look like they need to be in my bathroom.

I should try that mask treatment. I like my hair to stay soft and silky.

I’ve never colored my hair so no favorite products here. I’ve also never heard of purple or blue shampoo before.
Terri Steffes says
I have never heard of a blue or purple shampoo! My hair tends to grab the color easily and holds on to it without becoming brassy or dull. I am lucky in that wy!
Carol Cassara says
It’s not exactly cheap to have your hair colored in a salon and so, it would be nice to make sure you take good care of the treatment. Love that you’re sharing the products that work best for you! I really appreciate it!

My scalp doesn’t get along with Herbal Essences products. I get bad dandruff when I used them. I only had my hair colored once before, I did it myself but will never do it again ha ha.
Pam says
I need those frizz-defying hair towels. My hair can get pretty frizzy sometimes so that would be really helpful.
Glamamom says
Don’t kill me but I am fortunate to not color my hair yet! I will take those frizz eliminating towels all day long though! Especially with the humid summer weather.
Jeanine says
Oh yes! I need this post. I actually have to colour my hair this weekend, and need some new products to keep it looking good!

I’ve been dying my hair for over 20 years. That number is 1) ridiculous, and 2) makes me feel old. But that also means I need to be properly taking care of my hair! These are great suggestions.
