Sun Studio Tour in Memphis TN

This post contains affiliate links.

A few weekends ago my friend Elizabeth and I road tripped it to Memphis. We had tickets to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at The Orpheum and decided to make a whole weekend of it. Her birthday was the week before and mine is this month so it was a birthday trip!

We left early Saturday morning and our first stop was Sun Studio! She had been before but didn’t take the tour and I had never been before so it seemed like something fun to do and I can honestly say it was so worth it!

Sun Studio is literally the birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll. So many legends were discovered there and recorded records in the studio and it is still a working studio to this day! So who recorded there you ask? Elvis, BB King, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Howlin’ Wolf, Johnny London and more!

The history of the building itself is truly fascinating and the inside gives me those 50’s vibes with the fun cafe and gift shop. They still have the original front door that is now an inside door and part of the tour.

Speaking of the tour you know we did that! Tours are every hour and start at 10:30am. Tickets are $15 and it is worth every penny to get a look at all of the memorabilia. One of my favorite things to see on the tour was the control booth that was used by Dewey Phillips to play Elvis Presley’s first record, That’s All Right, which was an instant hit! Duh…

There was a TON of other amazing memorabilia but you need to see that for yourself. My absolute favorite part of the tour was seeing the recording studio in person. Do you even know how cool it was to stand in the same room that Elvis did? The room where he (and a LOT of other people) recorded numerous hits and got to the marks on the floor where he stood? Someone also donated one of the mics that was used by The King himself and you could touch it and take pics with it. I was AMAZED. And a little overwhelmed…HA!

So if you are going to Memphis and love music or just want to take an amazing tour I highly suggest checking out Sun Studio! The tour takes about an hour and is so worth it!! You should also check out the Memphis Zoo and Graceland while you are in town. I love Memphis!

Have you toured Sun Studio??
Have you been to Memphis??
