I have written a lot about skincare lately and I love it! I have gotten so many questions and comments about how to create a skincare routine and sticking to it and how intimidating people think it is. Well here’s my “secret”…it’s only as complicated as you make it and when starting out my motto is always LESS IS MORE.
Trust me, this is coming from the girl who used to sleep in a full face of makeup every night and only washed her face in the shower in the mornings. If I can create good skincare habits then so can you! It’s all about finding what works for you and just sticking with it and just remember that it is never too late to create good skincare habits!
One common misconception I see with skincare is that people think your skincare products have to uber expensive and that’s not true at all! There are some amazing drugstore products out there and I use them all the time. Use what works for your skin and your budget, there’s no need to break the bank for good skincare and no reason to use your budget as an excuse to not properly care for your skin.
First things first you really only need to start with THREE products. That’s not too bad, right? You need face wash, a toner and a moisturizer. You need to wash your face, tone and moisturize twice a day (morning and night). If you want to try double cleansing it’s totally fine to use the same face wash to wash with twice, just remember the first time you wash the goal is to remove makeup and the second wash is to actually clean your face.
When you have this routine down you can keep doing this forever and that’s fine! However if you’re comfortable with this and want to step it up a notch then you can start working on your “problem areas” or getting some preventative treatments in. This could mean adding an eye cream, a serum, different moisturizers for day and night time, a retinol product, etc.
Here is where I always get the question “what order should I be doing these products in and does it matter??” Now keep in mind that I am not a skincare professional but I have done a lot of research and know what works for my skin and here’s the order in which I use my products…
MORNING…FACE WASH – TONER – EYE CREAM – SERUM – MOISTURIZER
NIGHT TIME…CLEANSING BALM – FACE WASH – TONER – EYE CREAM – RETINOL – MOISTURIZER
WEEKLY…EXFOLIATE and MASK. I switch up my masks pretty often but I usually do these once or twice a week, usually on a night when I’m off work and have time for a bubble bath/bath bomb and mask session. Self care for the WIN!
I have linked my current faves/what I’m using but I will be doing a full post on my fave drugstore products soon as well as products that I like to splurge on. I am currently using a mix of drugstore and high end products and I honestly don’t care about the cost of a product as long as it works for my skin. Now that doesn’t mean I’m going to spend $$$ on one product, only that I don’t mind splurging every once in a while if it’s a really good product that I know I will use. HA!
I hope this post has helped you see that creating a skincare routine isn’t scary or intimidating and it doesn’t have to be complicated! You just have to find what works for your skin and keep at it! Your skin will thank you!
If you have any skincare questions or concerns, let me know and I will try to address them in a future blog post. Here are some topics I am working on for future posts…

I’ve had a skincare routine for years. I tend to skip the toner because I have dry skin and it seems to dry it out even more. I’m looking forward to seeing what toner you recommend. I’ve switched up several of my skincare products based on your recommendations and I love them all.

I am terrible at doing a skin care routine. I really need to do and my skin is so dry it needs help. Double washing my face is definitely something I need to start along with exfoliating.

I need to do more to my face and skin now that I am a little older. Until now all I cared about was avoiding acne but the wrinkles are starting to come so I will try these ideas.

I really need to have more of a routine. I basically just wash my face at night and leave it at that. But I need to start doing more. I’ll have to try these out.

Totally agree that less is more when it comes to skincare. I’ve actually given myself rashes before from using too much stuff! And TOTALLY agree that retinol is a must. It’s a gamechanger!

These seem like great products and a routine to keep your skin healthy. I usually just wash my face because most products end up drying it out and making me uncomfortable.

I have prioritized skincare for myself as well. I used to be really bad about finding a routine but have been trying to be good about it.
