First things first, I am OLD y’all. Like turning 36 tomorrow old, and I promise I’m not saying that just so you will come back tomorrow and wish me a Happy Birthday. Or am I?? HA! Anyway, I threw out my age to tell you that since I’m probably older than most of you reading this post you should believe me when I tell you I have done a lot of things to my skin and you should trust me when I tell you something works because I have literally tried everything at least once. #TWSS
I have been double cleansing since before it was a “thing”. I remember going to the Clinique counter in my early 20’s (the early 2000’s for those of you keeping count) and was only there to purchase my usual face wash and toner (my RIDE-OR-DIE toner) when a sales girl from behind the counter asked me if she could help me. The dreaded up-sell…UGH.
I told her that I only used Clinique’s face wash and toner and that was it and I was legit PROUD of myself. You see, all through high school and college I only washed my face once a day and that was when I was in the shower in the mornings. I didn’t wash my face before bed and went to bed with a full face of makeup on every single night. Just typing that right now is making me cringe. I am just LUCKY that I had good skin that didn’t break out much because I treated my skin like CRAP when I was a teenager.
Fast forward to my early 20’s and I had moved on to splurging on face wash and toner from the Clinique counter that I used religiously both morning and night. While this was a great step in the right direction and so much better than only washing my face in the shower it was still lacking in a lot of ways!
That sales girl behind the Clinique counter told me that while washing the makeup off my face before bed was a good step in the right direction I needed to wash it twice…one time to take the makeup off and another time to actually clean my face. MIND = BLOWN.
I took that piece of advice very seriously and have been double cleansing ever since. At first it was just with the same face wash twice, which is just fine but skincare has come such a long way since then!! My favorite way to double cleanse these days is with a cleansing balm first to get the makeup off my face and then again with a super gentle exfoliator (with NO sulfate!!) to make sure my skin is squeaky clean!
Why use a cleansing balm over a cleansing oil? Because oils are messy! HA! If you know me at all then you know I am a total klutz and while I LOVE cleansing oils and used them for a long time I would literally waste half of the product because it was dripping down my arms and chest. So annoying! So I switched to cleansing balms a few years ago and haven’t looked back!
My current favorite cleansing balms are Farmacy’s Green Clean Makeup Meltaway Cleansing Balm (which I talked about in depth in this post) and Heladerm’s Pro Melting Cleanser.
Both of these cleansing balms are super easy to use. You just scoop a little out with the spatula provided with each and then you can either rub it between your fingers to start melting it or put it straight on your dry face and rub it in slooooowly to make it melt into an oil. Once it’s melted and you feel like all of the makeup is dissolved you can just wash it off with a makeup wipe, washcloth, or with water and then follow with your second face wash. I prefer to wash it off with straight water and then use my Cetaphil Extra Gentle Daily Scrub as my second face wash.
The amazing people at Heladerm gifted me with this cleansing balm but I can honestly say it is truly wonderful!! This luxurious cleansing balm contains good for your skin ingredients like sweet almond, bergamot, lavender and coconut oils, shea butter, vitamin E and ginseng root gently purifies and deeply hydrates the skin as it cleanses.
This cleansing balm is super gentle and doesn’t irritate my eyes at all, which is a good thing because the only makeup I’m wearing these days is mascara and brows and so that’s where I use my cleansing balm! But it does a fantastic job at getting off every little bit of eye makeup that I use!
So if you have been in the market for a GREAT cleansing balm that is budget friendly to try then you should check out the Heladerm Melting Cleanser for sure! You can find it on the Heladerm website but I think it’s out of stock but it’s also available on Amazon and it’s a Prime item! YASSSSSSS!!!
Back to double cleansing…if you have just been washing your face once that’s great but you should totally try double cleansing, even if you don’t wear makeup! Washing your face the first time not only gets the makeup off but also sweat, pollution, old skin cells, bacteria and so much more!
So if you are just stating your skincare journey or just need to switch it up then I highly suggest double cleansing!
Do you double cleanse??
What are your favorite double cleansing products??

I need to start doing this. My skin would appreciate it, I’m sure. I do wash my face, but not good enough. I admit I can be quick about it.
Jeanette says
That totally makes sense! Because the first rule that you are doing is just cleaning up make up off. There’s a whole Nother layer that your skin needs cleaned out. I am definitely going to do this.

You know 30 is the new 20 and with things like this it might be the new teenage years lol. I wash my face with soap and water because I can’t use a lot of different things on my face but I need to do more as I get older.
Ricci says
I agree!!

I’ve never thought of double cleansing. This is remarkable! I’m sure my skin will thank me later!

My skin gets really dry, so I have to be very careful about what I use on it. I wish I would have understood the importance of removing mascara before bed when I was younger!
Ricci says
A lot of these products are great for dry skin, my skin has been getting so dry lately! UGH!
Chubskulit Rose says
I am ten years older than you and you can already see my age from my skin lol. You do take good care of your skin and it makes you look younger.,
Ricci says
Thank you!!

Happy Birthday! Obviously your birthday candles won’t be the only thing glowing as it seems you are keeping your skin so healthy you must be glowing too. So important to take care of ourselves and it looks like you are doing that right!
Ricci says
Thank you!!
Teresa says
My grandmother told me when I was a teenager to wash my face every single night before I went to bed and rise 30 times. To this day, I still rinse my face, counting to 30!! It has helped me out! Happy Birthday BTW
Ricci says
I like the idea of rinsing 30 times, I may need to try that!
Rachel says
I think the make up melting cream looks intriguing. I think it would be soothing.

Cetaphil! Me and my husband love Cetaphil and the scent is so good I loved the gentle and smooth in the skin.
Ricci says
Yes girl! I LOVE my Cetaphil!
Michael says
So here’s my cringe-worthy comment…. I’m right behind you age-wise {35 in November} and I am in the process {yay!} of breaking the bad skin care habits of going to bed with full makeup {when I wear it}, and not washing my face before bed. I was, and still am, fortunate to have god skin in that I almost never get blemishes and mostly fine line free.
I started to double cleanse on make up days and I try to do masks at least twice a week, mainly to just use them! I’ve been a St. Ives scrub girl since high school and it’s never let me down but I might have to try the Cetaphil one when this one is finished.
Ricci says
I’m glad you are in the process of getting into a better skincare routine! One day all of that going to bed with makeup on will catch up to you (from someone who used to go to bed with a full face of makeup on every night)…LOL!
