Holy crap y’all. Do you ever feel like time is moving at warp speed? How is it already July?? Speaking of July, Happy {late} 4th!! Sorry for the lack of blogging this week. With this whole selling my house, finding a new place to live and having to pack ALL of my belongings up I just haven’t had time. But I promise to get back to posting on the reg soon! Until then you can enjoy hearing about all what I’m reading in June!! There are some good ones here y’all!!
Oh yeah…I almost forgot to catch y’all up on my reading goal!! Including this month’s books I am at a total of 59 books out of the 100 goal I set. I think I may do it, and dare say surpass it?? Only time will tell!! Anyway, on to the books!!
ONE. The Secrets She Keeps by Mike Robotham. This book is a psychological thriller that will keep you the edge of your seat wondering how in the world it is going to play out. It’s about two women from different walks of life who are pregnant at the same time and go from acquaintances to friends while sharing their pregnancies. This book follows their two lives and shows that even though someone may seem to have the perfect life on the outside, not everything is at is seems. If you loved Girl on the Train then you will LOVE this book!!
“Two terrific female characters, both with secrets. Add Michael Robotham’s clean prose and whipcrack pacing. The result? A book you won’t be able to put down, although you may occasionally want to hide your eyes.” –Stephen King
TWO. How to Hang a Witch by Adriana Mather. My first YA read in a while, I loved this series from Adriana Mather. How to Hang a Witch is a book that focuses on Salem and it’s rich history and it’s present day residents that resemble the cast of Mean Girls, HA! This book focuses on the Witch Trials and I loved it because I went to Salem a few years ago and it brought back all of these fun memories. Plus the author actually went to Salem and explored and found out a lot about her personal history as well. Overall I LOVED this book!!
“It’s like Mean Girls meets history class in the best possible way.” —Seventeen Magazine
THREE. Haunting the Deep by Adriana Mather. Book two in the Hang a Witch series includes all of the same characters (well, the ones who survived the first book anyway) and this time focuses on the history of Salem that is associated with the Titanic. I loved this book as well and can’t wait to see what else Ms Mather writes!!
“Strikes a careful balance of creepy, fun, and thoughtful.” —NPR
FOUR. Ladies Night by Mary Kay Andrews. I have been a Mary Kay Andrews fan for along time now and I thought I had read all that my local library had to offer and then I found this book. Y’all this may be my favorite MKA book to date. It’s about a very successful blogger who spectacularly leaves her husband at the beginning of the book, he takes her blog and she has to start over. Of course there is more to it than that but all you need to know is that it was a great story!!! LOVE me some Mary Kay Andrews!! And yes, I take library books to the pool. LOL!!
FIVE. The Peach Keeper by Sarah Allen Addison. I read my third Sarah Allen Addison book this month and it did NOT disappoint. This book is about Willa Jackson, the town prankster in high school, who has a thriving business in Walls of Water North Carolina and who is about to dig up some family secrets that may should have stayed buried. This book is a great read and in true southern fashion, contains some very unforgettable characters. I can’t wait to read more of SAA’s books!!
“Secrets are ready to be uncovered. . . . Allen masterfully weaves a Southern world of believable characters and keeps readers flipping pages with this dreamy one-nighter.”—Southern Literary Review
SIX. The Other Woman by Sandie Jones. This book actually comes out August 21 but I got an advanced copy yo read through NetGalley! The Other Woman is not your traditional third wheel book…it’s about a man, his woman and the “other woman”, his mother. This is also not your traditional monster-in-law book but a book with a fantastic twist at the end that I didn’t see coming at all! This book is about Emily, Adam and Adam’s mom, Pammie. Pammie does her best to make Emily leave Adam doing everything in her power to tear them apart but in the end only two of the three are left standing. Who will be the one to leave this weird-threesome???
“The Other Woman is an absorbing thriller with a great twist. A perfect beach read.”―Kristin Hannah
SEVEN. Home Front by Kristin Hannah. I love Kristin Hannah books almost as much as I love Mary Kay Andrews. Kristin Hannah always chooses a tough subject, tackles it and makes you cry…but in a good way! I promise! Home front is about all of the different relationships in your life…relationships between husband and wife, mother and children, best friends, acquaintances, lawyer and client and many more. The focus of this story is on a woman named Jolene who has to go to war as a part of the Air Force leaving behind all of her people except her best friend who is a pilot like herself. All of her relationships are tested and the outcome of the book will make you cry literal tears. Needles to say I ill definitely read more of Kristin Hannah’s books in the future!!
“Home Front is Hannah’s crowning achievement.” ―The Huffington Post
EIGHT. The Death of Mrs. Westerly by Ruth Ware. From the writer that brought you The Girl in Cabin 10, The Lying Game and In a Dark, Dark Wood comes another psychological thriller!! Now this book didn’t keep me so on the edge of my seat as the others did but it is still a great read!! The Death of Mrs Westerly is a book about a young woman all alone in the world trying to navigate her life when she suddenly finds herself the heir to a large house and a member of a family she never knew existed. She discovered many nasty secrets in the search to figure out where she fits in with this new family and the ending is pretty dang good so keep reading and don’t give up on it!! It’s worth it!!
NINE. The Bridge Across the Ocean by Susan Meissner. This is a book told by three different women…Brette Caslake (present day) who visits the famously haunted Queen Mary at the request of an old friend, Annaliese Lange (1946) who is a German ballerina desperate to escape her past and Simone Deveraux (1946) who is the wronged daughter of a French Résistance spy. All three women play very important, yet different parts of this story which tells the tale of the war brides who came to America after WWII, the Queen Mary who brought them to America and Brett who has a unique gift that connects her to the other women.
“I was utterly spellbound, beguiled, swept up in this ghostly mystery.”—Jamie Ford
TEN. Everything, Everything by Nichola Yoon. This is a model day “boy in the bubble” story about a girl who is allergic to literally everything outside. She rarely ever goes outside her house and only has contact to a few people in her life…her mom, her nurse and a few teachers who she only ever sees over the internet. Then a boy moves next door and shakes up her whole world. Through getting to know this boy her whole world changes and she discovers things about herself she ever knew existed and of course the whole story boils down to one question. Is it worth it?
“This heartwarming story transcends the ordinary by exploring the hopes, dreams, and inherent risks of love in all of its forms.” -Kirkus Reviews
ELEVEN. Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas. My second YA series for the month, Throne of Glass is about a girl who is an assassin who rises up from a death camp to prove herself and compete for the chance to be the King’s Champion. If she can wi the competition she will have to serve the King for four years and then she will receive her freedom. Does she do it? Read it and see!!
“Readers seeking the political intrigue of Kristen Cashore’s Graceling and its sequels or the deadly competition at the heart of The Hunger Games will find both in Maas’s strong debut novel. . . . The verve and freshness of the narration make for a thrilling read.” ―Publishers Weekly
