Remember last week when I posted about Jenn getting married? Well I decided that since I was already in Georgia and off work I might as well do a little sight seeing so I extended my trip and drove to Savannah for a few days. Savannah has been on my bucket list of places to travel for a long time and going during COVID actually wasn’t bad at all!
First things first, I stayed at the Courtyard Marriott Downtown/Historic District. I loved the location, it was between the river district and Forsythe Park and everything I wanted to see and do was within walking distance. I also felt extremely safe staying there alone.
The first day that I got to Savannah I checked into my hotel and walked straight to Forsyth Park. It was like something out of a movie y’all!! The park itself was gorgeous and I could have sat and stared at the fountain all day. There was a band playing a socially distanced concert and people sitting on picnic blankets listening to the music. It was so soothing and serene and just gave me the best feeling!
After sitting at the park for a little while I walked towards the river district and decided to grab dinner to go at The Olde Pink House. I picked my my dinner…Low Country She Crab Soup and Shrimp and Grits…and walked back to my hotel And y’all. It was TO DIE FOR. I ate as much as my tiny tummy would let me then I took a bubble bath and snuggled up in bed and started watched Emily in Paris until I fell asleep!
The next morning I woke up with the sun and decided to do a hop-on, hop-off trolley tour of Savannah. If you have followed my travel blog posts or social media during any of my trips in then you know how much I love a good hop-on, hop-off trolley tour of new cities. They really are the best way to see a new city at your own pace and learn a lot about a new place.
In Savannah I went with Old Savannah Tours. OST is the oldest hop-on hop-off tour service in Savannah with 16 stops all over the city as well as characters along the way to teach you fun things about the city. I thoroughly enjoyed my day in Savannah with Old Savannah Tours and would highly recommend them to anyone who is new to Savannah.
Some of my favorite things I saw on the tour were the parks, fountains, statues, and of course Civil War memorabilia. The city is full of so many important articles left from the war and it’s so cool that they are just all out in public parks for everyone to see.
And you know it’s not a trip unless there is shopping involved. HA! I was excited to get to check out the Savannah Bee Company store in person because I have shopped they products online for years! I got to sample some honey and I grabbed a jar and some skincare products to take home with me.
And of course I stopped and got my Starbucks fix. I know, I know. I am basic as hell but hear me out! I have been getting 2 shots of espresso over ice with 2 pumps of pumpkin sauce in a venti cup over ice so I can add my Premier Protein shake to it and I knew they had that at Starbs so that’s where I went. At the time of this trip I was only 4 month post-op from my VSG surgery and that’s a super easy way to get 30 grams of protein in + get my caffeine fix.
While we are on the subject of food, I also stopped at Leopold’s, a Savannah staple, and grabbed a single scoop of Butter Pecan Ice Cream and ate it in a nearby park. It was delicious! And before you come at me for eating ice cream post-VSG just know that I only had a few bites and it was worth it!!
I ended the day by making a final loop on the trolley and then walked back to my hotel where I ordered food via DoorDash and ate it in bed again while binging Emily in Paris. Sensing a theme here? HA!
On my final day in Savannah I woke up early to eat breakfast at Maple Street Biscuits. I got the grits with a fried egg and bacon. I wanted to love that breakfast so much but the egg got me. For whatever reason since surgery I can’t do eggs! I ate what I could and then walked back to my hotel and napped for four hours. Oops!
After my nap I walked back to Forsyth Park and then just walked around looking at all of the gorgeous houses. I am obsessed with houses in Savannah and am planning a whole blog post about my faves but here is a little teaser for you…
I also toured the Basilica of St John the Baptist (full blog post about that later), the Mercer Williams House (Midnight of the Garden of Good and Evil house) and the Juliette Gordon Low House (Girl Scouts Founder home). No pics were allowed in either of the houses I toured but just know that they were gorgeous!!!
After all of my tours I walked to Paula Deen’s Lady and Sons restaurant and got food to go (chicken and dumplings, mac and cheese, broccoli cheese casserole, ooey gooey butter cake) and walked back to my hotel where I ate it in bed and finished up Emily in Paris.
The next morning I got up bright and early and made my way back to Arkansas. I LOVED the time I spent in Savannah and am glad to have another US city marked off my travel bucket list! If you get the chance to go I highly recommend it…alone or with a group!
One more thing before I go…solo travel doesn’t bother me at all. I love to travel and if you don’t have anyone to go with you can always go alone. I promised myself a long time ago that I wasn’t going to miss out on doing or going somewhere I wanted because I had no one to go with. I do update my friends and family on where I’m staying and they know where I am at all times and I have never felt unsafe while traveling alone. I would recommend traveling solo to everyone at least one time in their life, its so freeing!!
