Hey hey and happy Wednesday! It’s no secret that I work in health care and that I am also skincare obsessed. Who knew those two worlds would collide with the rise of the ever present maskne?! Also how weird is it that we live in a time where wearing masks when you leave the house would become essential? What a world we live in ya’ll…2020. That’s all I can say about that.
I have been wearing masks at work since March and everywhere else since April-ish. Since then my face has been breaking out something fierce. I usually only have hormonal breakouts and usually just on my forehead and hairline but these days it’s more on my nose, cheeks and chin…basically anywhere the mask touches my face. Yuck!
So what is the best way to combat maskne? Let’s talk about it!!
First things first, don’t wear makeup under your mask! When you are covering your face with a mask, your skin isn’t able to breathe and the makeup is either getting all over the inside of the mask and you are breathing it in or it is getting pushed further into the skin at the pressure points where the mask is digging into your skin and causing blackheads so honestly it just isn’t worth it.
Personally I haven’t worn makeup/foundation regularly since my last bout with Perioral Dermatitis and I have noticed that my skin is so much more clear and doesn’t break out as often. I do wear mascara and do my brows because honestly that’s all people are seeing anyway so why waste your makeup doing anything else?

Another way to help prevent maskne is to up keep your skincare game on point. Y’all know I love a good skincare routine and mine changes frequently because I love trying new products but during this time it is important to get back to the basics. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, use a good toner (if you need it) and moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!!! Y’all know how I feel about moisturizer. HA!! And even though your face is mostly covered by a mask don’t forget your sunscreen when you go outside!
These are a few of my current favorites…

…EltaMD sunscreen, EltaMD foaming facial cleanser and EltaMD pm therapy. Full disclosure these products were all gifted to me from Dr Branman and Exhale the Medspa but are honestly and truly amazing products!!
You can also up your skincare game by incorporating facials into your monthly skincare routine. If you have never had a facial before I highly suggest checking out Exhale the Medspa inside of Little Rock Cosmetic Surgery Center. I went a few weeks ago and had the best facial of my life.

I met with Crystal, the best aesthetician on the planet, and she suggested I try a HydraFacial to really deep clean my skin and help infuse it with things it was missing. I am dead serious when I tell you that my skin was literally glowing when I left.
A HydraFacial is truly a medical facial in that Crystal used physician-only ingredients and more advanced skin treatments that were customized to my particular skincare needs. She cleansed and exfoliated my skin as well as infused serums to help calm my skin down and restore it’s natural balance. My face was feeling pretty gross when I went to see her because I had just had a big breakout and come back from the beach the week before so I was getting over a sunburn and feeling super dry on top of having maskne. Sorry Crystal!

Crystal also suggested spot treating your maskne with something simple like tea tree oil. I happen to be a big fan of tea tree oil and was surprised I hadn’t thought of that on my own. Oops!
She also gifted me this awesome Maskne Kit, which I showed you above, and I can honestly say that I am a big fan of EltaMD now! If you live in central AR go grab one for yourself at Exhale!!

Another good tip to keeping maskne at bay is to wash your mask after each use. Obviously this doesn’t apply to surgical masks but if you are wearing cotton masks remember to wash them after each use and use gentle, scent free laundry detergent. On that same note you may try washing your pillowcase (or changing it out) more frequently as well.
I hope I didn’t overload anyone with all of this good info but the main takeaway is to keep your skin clean!! And if you’ve in central Arkansas and need a good facial, not just a HydraFacial but any kind, you should check out Exhale the Medspa at Little Rock Cosmetic Surgery Center.
Thank you Dr. Branman, Crystal, and Exhale the Medspa for sponsoring today’s post!! I enjoyed working you and my facial was seriously AMAZING!!
And since it’s officially PUMPKIN SPICE SEASON don’t forget to treat yourself to a yummy Iced PSL after your facial…YUM!!! Y’all know I had to have one on the day they dropped, which was also the day I got my facial. Did I mention I had my best day ever that day?? Glowing skin and ALL OF THE PUMPKIN SPICE. It just doesn’t get any better than that y’all.
