Face Mask Face Off! The Body Shop vs Lush Charcoal Masks

This post contains affiliate links.

Hey there and welcome to another, long overdue, face mask face off!! I started this series over a year ago and planned to compare and contrast some of my favorite face masks. I think I got two posts done (charcoal masks and rose masks) before I let the series slide. I did another post last fall (pumpkin masks) and intended to do more and you see how well that went, HA! But anyway, here we are in May of 2017 with my fourth face mask face off!! Today I am comparing and contrasting two charcoal masks, The Body Shop’s Himalayan Charcoal Mask and Lush’s Mask of Magnaminty.

I don’t know about you but I love a good charcoal mask. I feel like they really do pull out the impurities in your skin and leave it feeling squeaky clean!! Over the years I have tried my fair share of charcoal masks and in fact, my very first face mask face off was for charcoal masks. In that post I faced off The Body Shop’s Himalayan Charcoal Mask (same one I’m doing today) and GlamGlow’s SUPERMUD Clearing Treatment. The Body Shop mask won that face off so let’s see how it does today!!

Fun fact – I have actually gotten several requests for this face off and I love both masks so this should be fun!! Her we go!!

First things first, let’s talk about the obvious…packaging, size and price. I used a single use package of The Body Shop’s Himalayan Charcoal Mask for this post but I will base this comparison off the original glass jar packaging. Lush has it’s own iconic packaging that is made from post-consumer plastic. I love both packages so this is a tie for me!

As far as size and pricing, The Body Shop’s mask rings in at $28/3oz while Lush is $14.95/4.4oz. That makes The Body Shop $9.33/oz and Lush $3.39/oz. Lush is the obvious winner in this category!

Next up let’s talk about smell and texture, these are things that are important to me!! The Body Shop’s mask is chunky. There’s really no other way to describe it but I like it! It also has a minty/fresh smell and dries pretty quickly!

The Lush mask is a thick mask. It also has a chunky texture and is green, which I liked! I snagged the self-preserving formula of this mask and had read reviews that this mask was different from the original formula but I couldn’t really tell a difference. I like this formula because it lasts a long time, where most Lush products have a pretty quick expiration date. Back to the smell, I think it smells really fresh and clean, and minty of course!!

I usually do an awkward hand shot where I put both masks on the back of my hand but I thought I would switch it up and put both masks on so you can really see the difference!!

The Body Shop’s Himalayan Charcoal Mask –

Lush’s Mask of Magnaminty –

Now let’s get subjective! Which mask “worked” better. I think that out of the two masks I think The Body Shop mask worked better. The Body Shop mask dried quicker and smelled better in my opinion. Just my thoughts!!

So now let’s see who the winner is today!! In the first category on packaging, price and size Lush was the winner. In the second category of smell/texture The Body Shop was the winner. For the last category of which worked better The Body Shop was the winner.

I am officially declaring The Body Shop’s Himalayan Charcoal Mask the winner…again! Sure, it may cost a little more but in this case I don’t care. This is a good, quality mask and I love the way it works!! Congrats The Body Shop, you have done it again!!

Have you tried either of these masks??
Which face mask is your favorite??

I really love using charcoal masks, so thanks for the suggestions! I currently use the Biore self-heating charcoal mask packets and they make my skin feel so nice :)

Charcoal everything is so popular right now. But it can be tricky knowing which products are good ones. Can’t wait to try the masks.

I would still choose the body shop charcoal mask. I think it works better than the lush because I want a facial mask that dries quicker than the other brand.

I love both of the masks! I worked at Lush for the holidays and have always loved their products-working there just made it a little easier to try more with the discount mask of mag is probably my favorite product Lusg has ever made and I just wanted to state that there is actually a pretty big difference between the original and self-preserving formulas of Mask of Mag. The self-preserving has a lot of honey in it (that’s what preserves it!) and is therefore more hydrating. It also adds to the drying time and sometimes feels like it doesn’t completely dry-still feels kinda sticky. It will leave your face feeling much more plump and dewy whereas the original formula will dry down completely and will leave your face with the “tight and dry” feeling. I personally, love the original formula most and feel it more closely resembles The Body Shop mask (which I also love) and I think the original Mask of Mag is best ever ♥️
