Many moons ago I started a DIY project, painting a new dresser for my bedroom, and I finally finished it but then I forgot to take pics of the finished project. Typical Ricci move…LOL!! In my defense I did paint it one color, decide that I didn’t like it and then repainted it a different color. That’s a lot of painting.
Let me back and tell you that this summer I finally decided that I was tired of my bedroom furniture. I bought my bedroom suite right when I moved to central Arkansas a little over eight years ago and I have been a little bit “over” my black sleigh bed and matching furniture for some time now. I loved the style of furniture but I needed a new mattress and decided to upgrade from a queen set to a king and so I would red a new bed anyway so I decided to just get rid of everything and starts over!
It honestly felt really weird for a few days because I literally only had a bed in my room and no other furniture. I hadn’t really planned on what I wanted to put in there because I wanted to take my time instead of just going to a furniture store, picking something out and buying it.
So I bought this dresser from a neighbor and the mirror on a Facebook garage sale and decided to paint them! I had never painted furniture before but decided to go the chalk patin route since I wouldn’t have to sand or prep the furniture beforehand. Yes, my laziness factored into my decision on what to patin with. Plus chalk paint has a very little VOC so you can use it indoors. The paint I chose for this project was Maison Blanche’s Franciscan Gray and clear wax. It is the same type of paint I used in my home bar makeover!
Here is a before picture of my dresser and mirror…
…as you can see it had great potential!!
To me, the hardest part is prepping to paint. I hate having to tape everything off but it is a necessary evil. It seriously takes the longest but is so worth it in the end!
As you can see, I just laid out a plastic sheet on my living room floor and got to work. I watched a lot of Gilmore Girls while painting. HA!!
Here is after one coat of Franciscan Gray…
…and here is my finished mirror!
Now while I love this color, I did not love it when I got it in my bedroom. Plus I kind of forgot to paint the bottom and so it needed to repaint it anyway. So after a month or two of sitting in my room being silently hated I painted over the whole thing with Maison Blanche’s Maison White. It is a super bright color on it’s own but after it is painted over the gray it really softens it up. One more thing I love about chalk paint is that even after it’s been waxed you just give it a light sanding and repaint over it and it’s fine!!
So here is the final finished product…my new to me dresser and mirror!!
At one point I was going to paint the brass drawer pulls but I really like them up against the white!
So, do you like it?? I do!! And I am still seriously loving me some chalk paint!!
Have you ever painted with chalk paint??

You did a great job! I love the white. It really adds a light, airy feel to your space. The brass hardware looks great against the white. Now I want to go paint something. The mirror is awesome too!

I have not tried it yet, but I’ve seen so many beautiful DIY projects using chalk paint. Seeing your finished product got me sold on getting that kind of paint too. I’m going to ask my husband if we can repaint some of our drawers. Love the white color your chose for your dresser and mirror. Awesome job!

The dresser looks amazing! I have relatives that find old furniture and refurbishes them. They love doing it. I’d like to get into it, but I don’t have a lot of room to spread out to do it.

I really love how it brightens up the furniture. There are so many ways to reuse what we already have without buying new. I am glad you were able to find a color you were happy with.

Oh wow, I love the transformation! I didn’t even realise you could get vintage style paint! I’m usually a fan of black, but in this case the white is an awesome improvement!

Oh wow, what a great idea and it looks good. I need to do a dresser makeover instead of buying a new one like I had planned to do.

You did a great job. I prefer the dark paint. My husband, however, will like the white one.
