Home Bar Before and After ft Maison Blanche Paint

This post contains affiliate links.

I have always been into DIY projects and home decor. However I recently discovered the joy of chalk paint and have not looked back. HA! But really though…it is super easy to use and if I can do it then anyone can! I shared a couple pics on my SnapChat a few weeks ago of when I refinished my bedroom furniture and I fully plan on doing an entire blog post about that but I’m not completely finished with it yet! Soon…hopefully soon!

Last week I decided to paint a small hutch in my dining room I have been using as a home bar. I have had this particular piece of furniture for about 10 years. It was the first piece of furniture I bought and assembled on my own. It’s actually pretty sturdy and has survived several moves with me. Right after I got my Sophie pup she decided to use it as a a chew toy. She chewed up the leg leg and so it has been without paint for a while now…ugh. Here is a before pic-

The beautiful thing about chalk paint is that you don’t have to prime your furniture before hand. No sanding or painting with primer or anything. You just wipe it down and make sure there is no dirt or dust and then paint! Now with this piece being chewed up a little I did sand the rough pieces of the left leg. It is now smooth and you can’t really tell someone used it as a chew toy!

My preferred chalk paint of choice is Maison Blanche. It is the only one I have ever used so I can’t really compare it to anything else but I can honestly say that I love it! For this piece I wanted it to pop in it’s corner so I used Maison Blanche’s Collette. It is a bright teal color and is just gorgeous!!

Since this piece was so dark I used three coats of paint. Normally I just use two but I wanted this one to have some really good coverage so three coats was necessary. Luckily this patin dries really fast so it didn’t take long to paint it.

Here are the drawers after three coats, as you can see they just needed that extra coat to really finish it and make it smooth looking!

After the final coat of paint was dry I applied the wax! When you use any chalk paint you really need to seal it somehow. Maison Blanche makes their own brand of wax which I have always used. I just use the clear wax but it comes in a variety of colors. If you don’t seal your project it will have a chalky finish and could be ruined or stained. By using the wax you are protecting your finished from damage and giving it a smooth, velvet like finish!

I applied the was with a paint brush and let it sit for about 15 minutes and then rubbed it into the piece with a soft cloth. After you rub the wax in you need to let it cure for about 48 hours before you put anything on it in order to give it the best protection possible. So right after the wax was done I put the bar back where it was in the dining room and put the drawers about three quarters of the way in and let it sit like that for 48-ish hours.

After that time was up I put the original drawer pulls back on, decorated it and was back in business!!

You can’t even see the chew marks on this side anymore!!

I am seriously loving the way this bar came out!! This just motivates me to finish up my bedroom furniture so I can show that to you!! Here is a full “after” pic-

It’s just so bright and fun and really makes that corner pop!!

I can honestly say that this has been one of my favorite home projects to date! I have to warn you that painting with chalk paint is very addicting and will make you want to paint everything in your house…HA!!

Have you ever painted with Maison Blanche paint??
Have you ever used chalk paint??

DANG! That is a transformation! I love the color that chose and it pops in that room. You did awesome, especially since I know you had to keep your leg elevated when doing this, ha!! I love posts like this because I’m obsessed with DIY!

The wax makes a huge difference. We bought a desk for my daughter at an antique store and they didn’t have the wax on it. It now has spots. I know we will end up redoing eventually.

    Dang that looks sharp!
I love the shade of that blue.
We have a dresser in the girls room that could use a little sprucing up.
    This would be perfect!

I have never tried chalk paint but it looks beautiful. I love how you took an ordinary cabinet and made it extra ordinary. Beautiful

Wow, that paint made such a positive impact. Now it just absolute pops and is a conversation piece instead of just blending in the background. Now it’s time for you to throw a party!

Wow that is an awesome transformation. I need to hang onto the hutch that is currently in our garage. It would look awesome painted black or even another color.

Very cute! Me, I would’ve kept it black and put some type of custom made table cloth on top… just because most of my furniture is also black. lol

We’re giving serious thought to doing a whole wall in the toddler’s room with chalk paint. Think it could be a blast for everyone.

I have never painted with Maison Blanche paint, but I’ve used chalk paint to paint my and my son’s dressers. I also painted the dining table with it! Turquoise was one of the colors that I used since it’s a serene, yet vibrant color. :)
