Next week starts my big road trip and so I thought this week I would highlight all the places I am visiting and get some suggestions on places to see, eat, etc.
I am starting my epic road trip in none other that our nation’s capital, Washington DC! I have never been to DC before believe it or not. I know, I know I am ashamed. HA!
We will be there a couple days and already have passes to visit the White House and the Library of Congress. We put our request in to visit those two places back in February and just got approved last week. I was semi-stressing, LOL!
In order to visit the White House you need to contact one of your state’s senators or representatives and fill out a bunch of paperwork. You can submit it anytime from six months from your trip date until the day before. Obviously you are more likely to get approved the earlier you submit your info. You don’t pick the day or time, just tell them what days you will be in town and then you will hopefully get an approval letter with your date and time. I am soooo glad we get to go!!
We also got approved to tour the Library of Congress. Is it bad the the sole reason I want to see that is the movie National Treasure?? LOL!!
And that’s all we have planned so far. HA! What can I say, we are winging it!!
Some of the other places we want to visit are the Holocaust Museum, one of the Smithsonian museums, the Lincoln Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, the Washington National Cemetery, the National Mall, Ford’s Theater, and of course Georgetown Cupcake!!
I fully plan on splurging on my diet while on vacation. I don’t want to go completely nuts but I’m not going to deny myself a cupcake or three. HA!
I’m not really sure on where to eat so any and all suggestions are welcome!!
Have you ever been to Washington DC??
What are your favorite places to eat in DC??
Jeannette says
I lived in DC for a year when I was younger and loved the city. My personal favorite places were all in Old Town (which is technically not DC but close enough). But no matter where you go there, I’m sure you’ll have a fabulous time!
Christy Maurer says
I have only been there once! I really wish I could take my kids, but it is overwhelming…and not cheap lol. I loved all of the cool museums and the monuments. I don’t remember eating there because I was in high school…we probably ate McDonald’s lol.
Robin (Masshole Mommy) says
We were there in April with the kids. I have family in Bethesda, so I went a lot growing up and was happy to be able to bring the kids!
Stacie @ Divine Lifestyle says
I’d love to take the kids to D.C. It’s so full of our country’s history.
Diana Villa says
That will be my next stop, here I come DC! Thanks for the great post, now I know where to go :D

We haven’t been to DC in ages but I’m dying to visit again and take our daughter. And of course make a pit stop at Georgetown Cupcakes!
Grace Hodgin says
Great information because I did not know about making appointments to visit the White House, I just figured they had tours that I would need to book. I sent my son to Washington D.C. for a 6th grade trip and he loved the history he got to learn first hand.
Melissa Pezza says
We’ve been talking about taking the kids to D.C. There is just so much history there, and the monuments are spectacular.
lisa @bitesforbabies says
To be honest, Washington is not on the top of my list of cities to see in America however, this post might have me changing my mind! ;-)
Michelle de Guzman says
I have never been to DC and am so jealous. You deserve a cupcake so don’t hold back. Besides you will find with all the walking you probably earned it. Make sure to wear your vivofit or fitbit. You will be amazed how many steps you get in each day.
April @ Everyday Fitness and Nutrition says
I’ve been to DC several times and love it. I’ll probably be planning a trip back next year too.

I don’t want to rain on your parade so still go, but I live here and have for 25+ years and I’m not a fan of Georgetown Cupcakes. Plan to stand in line for at least an hour though.
If you have kids the Building Museum has a really cool beach exhibit going on right now. You can google it and get more details. Check out Chinatown for great pictures.
Have fun!

Enjoy your trip.
I would love to visit Washington again and be able to stay and visit.
These are really cool places to be on the list when you travel to DC.

It is okay if you have just been to DC. We just cannot be on all places.

DC is one of my absolute FAVORITE places to visit. My sister used to work in the White House so we got some special behind the scenes tours…it was so awesome even though at the time I was totally a crabby teenager who didn’t like anything.
Eole says
I live in DC and Georgetown Cupcakes is my favorite! The banana fudge cupcakes are addictive (:

Believe it or not, I have never been to DC either. But I hope to make it there one day soon!

I haven’t been to Washington DC either. If I went I would definitely try to get a tour of the White House. Plus, I’ve heard they gave cherries there so I would have to go buy some cherries.
I would love to just tour the city and see what it has to offer. I hope you have a great trip.
Lisa says
I think it’s hilarious that your reason to want to see the Library of Congress is because of National Treasure. Great movie! Have a wonderful trip!
Dawn McAlexander says
I loved DC when I visited it. My only regret was that I didn’t have enough time to see everything. I am going to say that, with just two days there, you will have that same regret. There is so much to see and do there.
Ron says
Not so many people are lucky to visit the WHITE HOUSE. For sure it’s gonna become a one great memorable trip of your life!

I have been to Washington, DC many times and have very fond memories going back to childhood! What a great post that made me smile! If I got lost, just look for me in the Smithsonian Museum! I wish I could click my heels and be in Washington DC today!

We were gonna go to DC after our trip to Hershey PAbut decided not to. Looking at your photos makes me regret we didn’t go.

I’ve never been to Washington before but it sounds like a lovely place to visit. It looks like there so many things to do and see!
Lynndee says
We love D.C.! We were there in 2011 but didn’t see much of it and didn’t even have the chance to sample a restaurant because we were there for a day tour only with our university alumni members. But we’ll definitely go back.
Ann Bacciaglia says
I love vacations that do not have a bunch of plans before we get there. Sometimes it is great to just wing it.

Don’t feel guilty, I’ve traveled a ton local and international and have never been to DC either, can’t wait to hear your tips and feedback about where to go and what to see (you know aside from the obvious! LOL)

I’ve never been but have always wanted to go. Good Luck and have a great time when visiting next week. =) Can’t wait to here all about it.
Jessica Simms says
I’m guilty of living 20 minutes from DC but never adventuring into it. Mainly because I have 4 kids ranging in ages from 9-2 which means anything we do will be hazardous lol. Our summer bucket list has the DC ZOO on it so hopefully I can work up the courage to bring them there before this hot summer ends.
rosey says
My son used to be stationed right there. He’s not now. I’ll miss visiting. :)
