If you have been reading my blog for any amount of time then you may or may not remember this post from a couple of months ago about making the switch to a natural deodorant. Since then I have made a few more “green” changes in my life such as starting to switch all of my cleaning products to plant based ones, trying new natural beauty brands and researching other things/products to try on my mission to try to live a greener/more natural life. At 34 (almost 35) years old I figure it’s high time I start to take of myself a little better and this is how I’m choosing to do it.
I was at Target recently and was in the feminine care aisle about to throw my usual brands in my cart when I saw that Seventh Generation™ had a line of feminine care products. Who knew? The more I stared at the products, the more I thought about pads and tampons and where they go, I mean, if I’m already worried about what I’m putting on my armpits shouldn’t I also consider what I’m using in or next to my vag? Yeah…talk about an eye opening moment right there at Target.
Needless to say, the Seventh Generation™ Comfort Applicator Tampons, Free & Clear fragrance-free Ultra-Thin Pads with Wings and Free & Clear Pantiliners made their way into my cart, into my home and into my life. Also, Free & Clear means the product does not have any sort of fragrance and is free of chlorine processing.
Ever the skepticist that I am, you know I was kind of wary as to whether or not these products would work as well as the brands I had been using and trusting for years. I mean I am all for going green and using alternative products but sometimes they take a little getting used to or finding just the right product to suit your needs. I’m not going to lie, some of the alternative cleaners I have tried are just lacking in getting the job done so when it came time to actually put these pads and tampons to use I was a little nervous. Would they hold up as well as others I had used in the past? Would they leak? Would I have to change them more often (which is sometimes not possible because I work in a super busy NICU)? Would they absorb as well? How about overnight usage? Would they last the whole 6-8 hours I sleep through all of my tossing and turning?
One of the first things I noticed about the tampons was the applicator itself…the smooth, BPA-free plastic applicator is designed for comfort and is made with 95% plant-based materials. The Free & Clear, Certified Organic Cotton Tampons are also hypoallergenic and made for your most sensitive skin with no added fragrances. I will be the first to admit that sometimes using a tampon isn’t the most comfortable thing in the world and if the applicator sucks then I’m not using them. Period. So I am happy to report to you that the applicator was indeed smooth going in and I never felt the tampon all day. TMI? I don’t even care because these are important things that you need to know before purchasing. If you know me then you know that I am all about comfort and I refuse to wear uncomfortable feminine products. There is already so much about being a woman that is uncomfortable so why should your feminine products add to that?
When I was first trying the tampons I also used the Free & Clear Pantiliners as a backup just in case there was any leakage because hello, I’m a skeptic and I also just wanted to try them. HA! Again, I am proud to say that the pantyliner wasn’t even needed because there was no leakage and then I felt really silly for wearing one but it served as a dual purpose because by wearing it I also got to test its level of comfort.
Side note – I always get nervous when I wear pads and pantiliners without wings because I’m always afraid it’s going migrate somewhere it shouldn’t. Don’t even ask about that fear, it’s never happened but in my mind it totally could. I know, I’m weird. But again, I am proud to say that it stayed in place all day and didn’t move! As for absorbency I honestly can’t tell you about that because I had no leakage from the tampon. Sorry!
Now on to my favorite test, the Free & Clear fragrance-free Ultra-Thin Pads with Wings test! First of all, YAY for wings!! Now that you know my weird fear of pad migration you can fully understand my happiness for wings. Confession – I wear pads about 90% of the time I’m on my period. I used to be a tampons only kind of girl and then work happened and sometimes working 12.5 hour shifts isn’t conducive to changing tampons as frequently as one should so I made the switch to pads only when I’m work because the thought of Toxic Shock Syndrome scares the bejesus out of me. Ya feel me??
Fortunately for me these pads provide the protection you need and are made without fragrances so your most sensitive skin is not exposed to unnecessary chemicals and the innovative PureFit™ design conforms to your body for reliable, leak-free protection, and comfort. I love the fact that they are whitened without chemicals containing chlorine (as are the pantiliners) and are free of fragrances. You know, one thing I have never understood in my 20+ years of using pads and tampons anyone would want any fragrance near their vag? That just seems very unnecessary to me.
So how did they wear? Amazingly! I love the super thin design (because no one wants to feel like they are wearing a diaper) and the length was perfect. They also absorbed everything like a champ and I didn’t once have to worry about leakage or spillage. Overall I really loved these pads and didn’t once have to do a butt check in the mirror to make sure there was no stain. WIN!
At this point I was pretty much already a Seventh Generation™ pad and tampon convert but there was one final (maybe the most important??) test…overnight usage. For this “test” I purchased the Free & Clear Ultra-Thin Overnight Pads with Wings. This is what I call the true test of all feminine care products. I toss and turn like a crazy person at night. I constantly wake up with a pad all bunched up or to the pad no exactly where I put it (hence my weird fear of pad migration) and then I have to deal with stained nightclothes and sheets and then I feel like I’m12 again and that’s just awkward. Know what I mean? Ughhhh.
So there I was, Skeptical Susie, crawling into bed and praying to the gods up above that my sheets would survive the night and I am proud to say that I woke pleasantly surprised to see my pad still in place with no weird bunching and my sheets perfectly stain free! Hallelujah! And just like the regular pads and pantiliners these reliable feminine hygiene products offer PureFit flexible protection with no artificial fragrances or chlorine processing. I call that a true WIN y’all.
So overall, I am highly impressed with the protection and level of comfort that Seventh Generation™ feminine care products have to offer. So if you are in the market for an alternative feminine care product that are whitened without chemicals containing chlorine or fragrances, then I highly suggest you check out Seventh Generation™’s line of feminine care products at your local Target. Also check the Cartwheel app before you purchase because I got 15% off my purchase and a $5 gift card with the purchase of four Seventh Generation™ products! Y’all know I love a good deal, right?? RIGHT!
Have you tried any Seventh Generation™ products?? Have you tried any Seventh Generation™ feminine products??
I love, love, LOVE this! I try so hard to avoid anything with man-made additives and chemicals in my food and facial products. I’ve never thought about the fact that I’m putting stuff that’s bad for me in the most sensitive part of my body! I have to check this line out.
I agree that it’s important to have good quality feminine products. Seventh Generation sounds like it’s good quality.
HAHAHAHa I’m just like you a Skeptical Suzy! No matter what product I try, I always dread it failing me when I need it most! Periods are the worst! This product looks like a great one! I’ll have to look for it at the store!
These are the kinds of changes I started making when I knew I wanted to start a family. I began reading labels, doing research, and stopped using products with chemicals. It’s great they have feminine care products so that we aren’t exposing our bodies to more toxins.
With three girls, I love learning about new feminine care products. I will definitely check these out!
Sadly, I have no need for this type of product any longer but that’s awesome that they came out with feminine products. Their other products are great.
I’ve been slowly switching over to products that are safer and better for me. I’m excited to try these!
I stopped using non-organic tampon/pad brands eons ago after learning that they contained chemicals. Seventh Generation is one of my favorite brands!
I had no clue that there were organic feminine hygiene products. I don’t typically wear tampons unless I have too because of the chemicals.
Oh wow! I had no clue they were now making ladies products. I have had some bad reactions to pads and tampons, you would think pads are safe but many the chemicals leech in to our skin and can cause some of the icky feelings we have monthly. I can’t wait to check these out now!
I agree that it’s important to have good quality products. Seventh Generation sounds like it’s the way to go!
Seventh Generation is a great company. I didn’t know they made feminine products. I’m going to have to check them out.
This is the first time that I’ve heard of these brand. I prefer wearing “thin” too and these products sound great. Will check them out.
When I wear pads I prefer the thin ones. I remember when I was a young girl and just starting my cycle and my mom gave me these massive sized pads. Never again! I wear a cup now. It’s wonderful!!
I’m a big Seventh Generation fan in general and haven’t thought about using their feminine care products! But, I will now!
