I have been on the search for “the perfect red lipstick” for a while now. I normally don’t wear color on my lips at all, just lip balm, because my lips are big and I didn’t want them to stand out.
When I was a little girl I got teased a LOT for my big lips. Little kids are really mean. Those same mean little kids told me the birth mark on my arm was cancer and wouldn’t play with my at recess. Because of that I didn’t wear sleeveless shirts for years. It’s amazing how things affect you so much when you are little and spill over into adulthood. Gah!
Back to lips…I remember coming home from school crying one day because someone made fun of my big lips and my Mom told me not to listen to them and that one day the boys would love my big lips. I though t it was gross at the time but now I totally get it…{insert winky face here}.
Like I said earlier, I have been on the search for the perfect red lipstick for years. I wanted something bright but not too bright. And maybe something with a hint of pink? I have tried a LOT of red lipsticks but more were too harsh for my skin tone or too orange. Yuck!
I remember my Mom never being able to find the perfect shade of lipstick either and so she always layered a couple on and they looked fabulous so I thought I would experiment with a couple lipsticks and lip glosses I already have and see where I got with that. I am proud to say that after many failed attempts I found a combo that works for me!! Woohoo!!
I even made a little tutorial on how I do it! Get prepared for a lot of selfies….LOL!
First things first you must hydrate your lips!!! I always start with a great lip balm. There is nothing worse than having cracked red lips because they are super dry. It makes you look older too so always keeps your lips hydrated! My current fave is Burt’s Bee’s Hydrating Coconut and Pear.
After thoroughly hydrating my lips I put a light coat of Urban Decay’s Revolution Lipstick in 69.I actually got a sample of this in an Ipsy bag a few months ago and thought it was a little harsh by itself. It’s a great red with pink undertones and I love that mix of pink and red.
After I get the lipstick on I put on a layer of NYX Butter Gloss in Vanilla Cream Pie. It smells delicious and is super shiny!! I picked this gloss up last week at Ulta and I LOVE it and will definitely be getting more colors soon!! I also love how it softens the lipstick up a little bit.
So there you have it, my perfect red lipstick!!
Here is a before/after shot so you can really see the difference.
I LOVE IT!!!
And of course at the end of the day there is always the hassle of taking off your fabulous red lipstick. A little trick I learned at a dance recital was vaseline! Just out it on your lips, rub it in, and wipe it off. No stains and it’s not all over your face!
What is your favorite red lipstick?? Have you mixed colors to find your perfect shade??
Beautiful color! Women go through so much to be beautiful, don’t we! It is so worth it in the end. You look fabulous!
You look great! My favorite lipstick is Ruby Woo from MAC.
You have beautifully shaped lips! You should definitely play and embrace more colors. They would look fabulous on you. This color looks great on you. I love a red lip. My favorite red lip currently is Stila All Day Liquid Lipstick in Fiery. Amazing!
OH! I love lipstick!!!! Love your photo’s. The best red is a blue based red. xx
I like your lipstick routine, but you have an amazing natural lip colour. I don’t think you need any lipstick at all.
