That Time I Cried at Crossfit

I haven’t been the most active person lately. When I say lately I really mean the last 3 or 4 years. It all started when I graduated from Respiratory school and got my first job.

I’m sure you know how this story goes….you are a poor college student and can’t afford to eat out or gas to go many places so you eat at home and walk everywhere. You are in really good shape. And then you get your first job with good paychecks and you start eating (and drinking) all the time because why not? You can afford it now!

So I got my first job and was on nights for three years. During that time I gained almost 40 pounds. I blame myself but really what is there to do at night? On my nights off I would stay up anyway to stay on some sort of schedule and the only thing to do in the middle of the night is watch movies and eat. So  eat I did. And eat, and eat, and eat.

I can see the difference in these pictures and I can’t wait to get back down to how I looked in 2008. One day…

A couple people I know at work have been doing Crossfit. One guy I work with has lost 40 pounds in 3 months. WOW!! Granted he is pretty big and guys do lose weight faster than girls but that is still awesome!

The classes are about 20 minutes after I get off work and on my way home so I got the courage to sign up. Then I went to observe a class. I watched for about 20 minutes and it didn’t totally scare the shit out of me so I signed up to start my Foundations class the next week (this past Monday).

Monday came and I was kind of terrified all day. Especially when my lovely co-workers started talking about people who shit themselves when they work out instead of puke (I was scared I would puke). Way to go people….thanks for scaring me even more than I already was.

Well, it finally came time to clock out of work and go to class. I wasn’t sure if you could change clothes there so I did the classy thing and changed in my car. I don’t think I flashed anyone…

I got there and was glad to see there were about 6 other people in my Foundations class including 2 girls! All the guys already looked super buff and one had done Crossfit at another facility so he was waaaay ahead of the rest of us.

Anyway, the class started out ok, we jumped rope, learned three different squats, did push-ups, and learned how to do Burpees. Burpees were invented by the Devil himself (according to Brin and I fully agree).

After learning all of that we then had to do a “mini” workout. We had to do Burpees/Push-ups/Squats 15/12/9. That means you do 15 Burpees, 15 push-ups, 15 squats, then, 12 Burpees….and so on until you finish. Basically I was thought I was dying after about 5 Burpees but I finished my 15 of everything, had tears rolling down my face and quit.

I didn’t walk out or anything but I stopped my workout and went and talked/sobbed to the instructor. He told me I could quit and I finished the class standing by him. All the guys finished the whole thing in about 10 minutes and the other 2 girls didn’t finish after 15 minutes (our time limit). I didn’t feel so bad about myself after that.

I am proud of myself for going and NOT puking. Tuesday I was soooo sore I could barely walk. I am not sure if I will continue on with Crossfit but I am proud I tried it.

What workout do you do?

Wowzers! You are awesome, regardless of if you finished or not. Crossfit scares the living life out of me! ha! I think it’s awesome that you tried it out! I’m not sure I could.

I have had a trainer for the past year and she has nothing good to say about crossfit. It is very hard on your joints, which may be fine now but give it 10-20 years and you won’t be fine. I have recently started running and it has got to be the best workout ever! If your interested the couch to 5k program is a really great way to get started!

I’ve totally changed clothes in my car before Crossfit before. No shame! Try a nice (long) bubble bath with Epsom Salt when you get home from a workout. It helps with the soreness.

Oh my god, people shit themselves?!?! That is horrifying. My sister in law does Crossfit and loves it, and I am super intrigued and really want to try it. I am hoping for a Groupon since it is so damn expensive!

Good for you for going and giving it a try. Now you don’t have to worry about the “what if”. I’m scared to go to a group fitness class for the first time on my own so major props to you for going, and to something like Crossfit on top of it which just sounds scary to me!

I just got back from shopping for a dress for my cousin’s wedding. I discovered that I have gone up two dress sizes in the past year! I need to get myself motivated, like you.
