Be Your Own Valentine

This post contains affiliate links.

I have seen a lot of posts and tweets about how bad it sucks being single on Valentine’s Day. Having spent the past couple V-Days single, I’m not going to lie and say its “fun” but it’s not all bad either.

It is what you make of it.

If you want to wallow in self pity and spend your night depressed and miserable then do it. You can do whatever you want. However, I can think of better things to do with my time.

Being a sort of expert on single girls Valentine’s Days I have come up with a list of things you can do that aren’t mushy, gushy, or romantic themed AT ALL! (Of course I made a list, I’m OCD remember?? LOL) Here it goes…

  • Get together with your girlfriends and have a girls night in. Cook something great, wear some comfy clothes, clean out the dvr, and get chocolate wasted.
  • Go to the movies!! Lots of great movies are coming out on Valentine’s Day. Beautiful Creatures, Safe Haven….ok, maybe don’t go see Safe Haven because every couple on the planet will be there. You should probably stick to a slasher movie.
  • Drink. Get all dressed up and go out with your single girlfriends! Maybe there will be some single guys out too?

Personally I have to work so I will be doing none of the above. BOO!!!

What are your plans for V-Day??

Yes! I totally agree with this post! Stop whining about being single and enjoy your time of not having to answer to anyone!

To be fair, I was the one single girl with all the dating/engaged/married friends for years…so I know how the “be your own Valentine” idea is easy to talk about, but not always easy to maintain (getting together with girlfriends is especially difficult if none of them are single!). I think these are great suggestions, though. If all else fails, single people, go to the movies and don’t worry about where someone else wants to sit or what they want to see. :)

I just treat it like any other day. Haha. No one can make me as happy as I make myself. People who need to be in relationships in order to feel validated irritate me.

It can be difficult for those of us with someone as well. I’m engaged but my fiance and I are long distance and we can’t be together on Valentines Day. But like has been said, whether single or apart from our S.O. only we can make ourselves happy.

Two years ago I was single for V-Day, so I got a bottle of wine and watched a horror movie by myself. Awesome. The year before that, some girlfriends and I got Chinese take out, and watched movies at home and ate one-too-many of those super sweet sugar cookies with a ton of frosting. But it was a great night!

I’m not a big fan of Valentine’s Day. Lee and I don’t really do much for it. I’d love to get chocolate wasted though. :) Chocolate’s always good.

One year in college when my roommates and I were all single we had a “no date party” that was awesome. Another year I bought myself tulips my fave and told my roommate some guy gave them to me (after I gave him money). THis year, I’ll be hanging out with the husband, probably just a dinner out :)

Awesome post and ideas! I work as well on Valentine’s Day so most of the day will be occupied. I really want to see Safe Haven but will definitely not be going on Valentine’s Day.

THANK YOU for giving me the “paradigm shift” that I needed about Valentine’s day. I like the way you’re looking at things- I needed a wake up call. That’s why you’re SUCH a great friend to me. PS- I’m with Allie….we’re Valentine’s and we’d LOVE to have you as our Valentine, too! :)

Not bad ideas at all :) Even though I don’t fall into the single category anymore, our long distance relationship has definitely left me looking for something fun to do to celebrate the day! I am headed to see the Oscar nominated Animated Shorts tonight. Super excited! Hope work goes smoothly for you!!
