Today I’m going to talk about two of my absolute favorite things…summer and hair care. I’m also going to take it back. And when I say back I mean waaaaaay back, to the summer of 2003 to be exact. Why the summer of 2003 you ask? Because that is when I discovered Dove hair care. Life changing moment y’all.
I think I have written about this before in the past but in case you haven’t been a reader for very long I have a sort of history with my hair. It has always been on the dry and frizzy side and was literally an untamed lion’s mane for most of my life. I thank my lucky stars every day to whoever invented the Chi because even though I say that is what “fixed” my hair it was really that plus learning how to take better care of my hair.
So back to the summer of 2003. I was a counselor and lifeguard at an all girls summer camp deep in west Texas that summer. Before leaving for that trip I stocked up on all of my favorite beauty items to take with me because I didn’t know if I would be able to leave or not once I got to camp. I took my all time favorite face washes, body washes, sunscreens, swimsuits and of course hair care products. You see, I had recently discovered that Dove had a hair care line and was obsessed. When I got to camp that summer I found out after my two week orientation that I would be the counselor in the oldest girl’s cabin and was a little bit intimidated. I had heard stories about these girls from the other counselors (they had all been going to camp together since they were 5 years old) and knew I had to up my game. Well, long story short after a few days of being their counselor and coming back to the cabin with wet hair from my lifeguarding sessions they were all complimenting me on how amazing my hair smelled and how shiny and healthy my hair looked and I knew I had them. I won those girls over with some Dove hair care. We were friends for the rest of the summer and that made my job a whole lot easier! Thank you Dove!!!
A couple of weeks ago the wonderful people at Dove sent me this huge box of goodies to use and share with y’all!! Isn’t that just the sweetest??!! So today I am going to share with you my summer hair care essentials, featuring Dove of course!
So for most of the year my hair is pretty normal. Sometimes my roots get greasy feeling but most of the time my hair is on the drier side. I only wash it every 3-4 days and I really think that has helped. My hair is naturally pretty wavy and super fine but I have a ton of it so it always looks like there is more of it than there really is. HA!
During the summer months my hair gets super dry, especially when I’m at the pool or lake all day. I’m going to the beach later this week so my “summer hair” is going to start earlier this year. I don’t know about your hair and scalp but when mine gets dry it starts to flake. And I’m not talking about small flakes, I’m talking big extremely noticeable flakes. GROSS!! So I always have some kind of dandruff control shampoo on hand but why in the world do they always smell so bad?? Ugh. Enter into the picture Dove DermaCare Scalp. Dove DermaCare Scalp is made for daily use and is made with Active Pyrithione Zinc to treat dandruff. It helps relieve itching and still helps your hair maintain it’s perfect moisture balance. The Pure Daily Care has a fresh Rosemary scent while the Invigorating Mint has a spearmint scent. So far I have used the Pure Daily Care and followed it with the Coconut and Hydration conditioner and loved the effect!! My hair stayed smooth and dandruff free and didn’t smell weird!! If you can’t tell smell is very important to me when it comes to hair care! HA!
Another of my summer hair essentials is dry shampoo. Ok, actually that is a year round essential but during the summer I try not to wash my hair as often to diminish any damage and dry shampoo helps with that. I have used Dove’s dry shampoos in the past and loved them but not the white residue that it left behind. I am happy to report that this new Dove Detox and Purify Dry Shampoo is clear!! Give me all the praise hands on that one!! I get really excited about clear dry shampoo if you can’t tell. HA!
Another fantastic product that Dove sent me is their Dove Extra Hold Non-Aerosol Hairspray. I live in the south and you know the old saying “the higher the hair, the closer to Jesus”? Well it’s true. And absolutely nothing holds my curls, waves, bump and whatever else I do to my hair better than Dove. Plus it smells amazing! One aspect that I truly love about this hairspray is that it is super fast drying so you can touch your hair pretty quickly after you spray it down. Most hairsprays take a while to dry and this is super frustrating when I touch my hair and not only do I mess my ‘do up but my hands feel sticky and gross. But not with Dove!!
A few other great sum me hair essentials of mine are Kinky Curly’s Spiral Spritz (for days when I let my hair go natural wavy/curly), drybar’s Southern Belle Volumizing Mousse (again, for natural hair days), Kiehl’s Magic Elixir (for a super dry and itchy scalp), Biosilk (to tame flyways and keep straightened hair straight) and It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In Lite (before blow drying).
Some other great summer essentials that Dove sent me, non hair related, are their brand spanking new Dove Shower Foam, Dove Clear Finish Dry Spray Antiperspirant and Dove Beauty Bars. The shower foam remind of Dove’s original body wash (back when it only came in one scent) that I used after every basketball game in high school so it makes me feel 16 again. I wish!! And I can’t wait to take the dry invisible spray antiperspirant to the beach with me because I plan on wearing sleeveless dresses and tops and nothing gets on my nerves more than deodorant on clothing. Ugh. And everyone knows that Dove Beauty Bars are just classic. They don’t dry your skin out and yet still leave you feeling clean and refreshed all day!
So thank you Dove for this amazing box of goodies that I will definitely be using all summer long!! I love Dove. How about you??
Do you use Dove products??
What are your summer hair essentials??
